Year 1
You’ll complete first-year seminars, required courses and take part in vocation activities through the Education Department. If your schedule allows, you’ll also take EDUC 110: Called to Teach.

Year 2
In your first or second semester—or first summer session—you’ll take EDUC 200-level courses like Culture, Linguistics and Identity, Teaching in the Middle School and Educational Psychology. These courses, along with others for elementary education majors, include hands-on field experience.

Year 3
In your third year, you’ll complete your methods courses which also include hands-on field experience. Most students take these over two semesters. 

Year 4
In your fourth year, you’ll complete your student teaching experience. 

As a Concordia education major, you’ll gain hands-on classroom experience starting in your sophomore year with clinicals in English as a Second Language classrooms, teaching lessons in local classrooms as a junior, and completing student teaching as a senior. Throughout, faculty will guide and mentor you, often creating mentoring relationships that last a lifetime.

• You can also teach in other languages through the renowned Concordia Language Villages, earning credit during the school year and summer. The Master of Education in World Language Instruction even includes summer classes at the beautiful Concordia Language Villages site in northern Minnesota. 
• If you’re independent and motivated, the Global Student Teaching program lets you complete your student teaching in the U.S. or abroad—in places like Europe, Africa, Australia, Asia and more. Domestically, students have had placements ranging from Maryland and Hawaii to reservation and immersion schools.

As an elementary education major, you’ll take the following courses to learn about teaching multilingual students: 

• Culture, Linguistics and Identity
• Introduction to Language Learning

You’ll also have the opportunity to study Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) by taking courses or pursuing a minor in TESOL. These courses often include hands-on experience in a local school. 

All elementary education majors have a faculty member in education as their advisor.

Secondary education majors can choose to have an education faculty member as their advisor too.

Because class sizes are small, education faculty work closely with you during your hands-on teaching experiences. 

The Education Department partners with local schools to provide meaningful field experiences and support ongoing growth for students and teachers. Other program experiences include:

• Annual Vocation Retreat for all education majors to delve into critical issues of student support (food and shelter insecurity, trauma etc.)
• Commitment Signing Ceremony for newly admitted education majors.
• Commissioning Ceremony for graduates on the eve of commencement. 
• Fall Welcome event for first-year education students to meet education faculty and students.
• A student-led Education Club provides fun events like craft nights, movie nights and informative education-related events.
