About

Hamline University was the first institution in Minnesota to graduate licensed teachers. Today, education leaders consistently recognize Hamline graduates as highly prepared to succeed in today’s classrooms.

When you enroll in Hamline’s School of Education and Leadership, not only do you join a network of thousands of education practitioners in kindergarten-grade 12 schools, higher education, and other educational organizations in the region, but you also join a school known for its excellence in teacher preparation and continuing education. That reputation is born out in our graduates, who, each year, line the list of Minnesota Teacher of the Year finalists and are consistently named Minnesota's top educators.

Our innovative curriculum prepares you to engage learners in diverse contexts and communities with a deep understanding of the various systems that impact your practice. You'll graduate primed to shape a more equitable, sustainable world from your first day with your students.

Program Info

Hamline is known for its excellence in teacher preparation. Its graduates are often recognized as Minnesota’s top educators. As the first school in Minnesota to graduate licensed teachers, Hamline continues to be highly regarded by school principals for preparing students to succeed in today’s classrooms.

You’ll work closely with experienced professors to develop the skills and strategies needed to create engaging, student-centered classrooms while becoming a leader and advocate in your school. The program includes 100 hours of hands-on experience in kindergarten-grade 12 schools, including at Hamline’s own dynamic kindergarten-grade 12 lab school just across the street from campus. These experiences prepare you to teach in ways that foster positive and effective learning environments, enabling you to make a lasting impact on students.

As an undergraduate student:

  • You can get a stand-alone major in Elementary Education, English as a Second Language or Special Education.
  • If you’re aiming for a secondary teaching license, the education co-major pairs a teaching license with a subject-area major like Social Studies, Math, Science or Communication Arts and Literature.

If you earn your BA in Education with an initial teaching license, you can join Hamline’s accelerated Master of Arts in Teaching program and complete your master’s degree with just two extra classes after graduation and student teaching.
