Core Skills for Teachers of CTE (8710.8000)

You’ll complete the Core Skills requirements by attending an in-person professional development event hosted by LCSC, called the CTE Core Bootcamp.

After the conference, you’ll submit proof of your learning through Proserva. 

If you’ve already completed similar training (such as CTE TIP), college courses, or have teaching experience, LCSC can also recognize that prior learning to demonstrate the standards—just provide the right documents.

• COR2: CTE Curriculum and Course Development

• COR3: Safe and Appropriate Methods of Instruction

• COR4: Career Development Theory and Practice

• COR5: Management of Learning Environments

Standards of Effective Practice (8710.2000)

If you’re an initial licensure candidate, you’ll complete the Standards of Effective Practice teaching methods by taking online professional development courses through LCSC in Proserva.

After finishing the training, you’ll submit proof of your learning in Proserva. 

If you’ve already done similar professional development, college courses, teaching experience, or earned certifications, LCSC can recognize that prior learning to demonstrate the standards —just provide the necessary documents.

If you’re an additional licensure candidate, you already completed the Standards of Effective Practice in your initial license.

This varies by license. You are exempt if you have one of the following: 

• Five years of industry experience
• An industry certification, or
• A degree in the content area

Teacher Coordinator of Work-Based Learning Endorsement (8710.4825) – Optional but Strongly Encouraged

You’ll complete online professional development or personalized training through LCSC to meet these standards. If you’ve already completed similar training, college courses, or have teaching experience, LCSC can recognize that prior learning—just provide the necessary documents.

The endorsement covers these key areas:

• WBL1: Central Concepts, Inquiry, History, and Context

• WBL2: Customizing the WBL Experience

• WBL3: Implementing the Infrastructure

• WBL4: Guiding Partnerships

Clinical Experiences (8705.1010)

Initial Licensure Candidates:
You’ll complete at least 100 hours of field experience before student teaching. At the end of the program, you’ll complete a minimum of 12 full-time weeks of face-to-face student teaching. Throughout, you’ll serve as the teacher of record in your own classroom.

• CTE1: Field Experience
• CTE2: Student Teaching

Additional Licensure Candidates:
You’ll complete a minimum of 80 practicum hours at the end of the program, while also serving as the teacher of record in your own classroom.

• CTE3: Practicum Experience

LCSC’s licensure program is an alternative teacher preparation program, which is defined in statute as a teacher preparation program not based in higher education.

LCSC’s program is highly individualized. LCSC is most concerned about the application of the content and not simply the knowledge of it; which is atypical of most traditional teacher preparation experiences. This does take some getting used to for most candidates, but also provides for a rich learning experience in the end.

Here’s what sets LCSC apart from traditional teacher program experiences: 

• Competency and standards-based instruction—no mandatory assignments, grades, or homework.
• Content is both online and available in-person to best fit your unique needs—no rigid schedules or required classes.
• Recognition of prior experience, training, and certifications—no need to complete extra work for standards you are already an expert in.
• Student teaching is at your own school in your own classroom.
• Flexible timeline—complete as fast or as slow as you are able to, depending on your needs.

As you complete your alternative licensure program, you’ll learn how to lead a well-rounded and supportive CTE classroom.

• Social-emotional learning is a required part of all Career and Technical Education programs and is often taught through Career and Technical Student Organizations.
• If you’re a teacher of color, you’ll have access to extra support, including mentoring and induction to help you thrive in the classroom.
• LCSC staff receive specific training to support BIPOC and diverse students as you work to meet the Standards of Effective Practice. Several LCSC staff members are PELSB-approved Cultural Competency trainers. 

Additional free mentoring is available through the following statewide CTE induction programs:

CTE Teacher Induction Program (TIP)
Introductory mentoring and induction for secondary teachers new to the profession who are in need of support with foundations of CTE and basic pedagogy/instruction, most often Tier 1 and Tier 2 teachers, or those teaching on an Out-of-Field Permission. CTE TIP offers free curriculum, mentoring, professional development and resources.

License-Specific Teacher Induction Programs (TIP)
Advanced mentoring and induction for those who have recently completed a teacher preparation program (Tier 3) or those who have completed CTE TIP (Tier 2 or Tier 3) and need license-specific support to build a program, design and adopt curriculum, and enhance their teaching and pedagogy. Tier 1 or 2 teachers should first complete CTE TIP.

Once you’re admitted to the program, you’ll be assigned an advisor and mentor who will guide you throughout your licensure journey. You’ll work together to identify your individual licensure needs and create a customized plan, including a sequence of modules and field experiences to help you learn the required content.

You’ll work through the program’s modules at your own pace with support from your advisor. You’ll complete the program through a variety of experiences, including—but not limited to:

• Intensive professional development
• Asynchronous online instruction
• Earned certifications and industry credentials
• Other forms of demonstrated proficiency through a portfolio
