Year One
Start general education courses and explore the field with classes like Introductory Education Field Experience, Children’s Literature or Children and Youth with Exceptionalities. You’ll also take an orientation course led by education faculty to connect with peers and start building your support network.

Year Two
Finish your general education courses and complete the 30 credits needed for admission into the Professional Education Unit. Once admitted, you’ll begin core teaching courses and gain hands-on experience in local classrooms.

Year Three
Dive deeper into teaching through advanced coursework and more frequent field experiences. Each semester builds on the last, helping you grow your skills and teaching identity.

Year Four
With over 100 hours of fieldwork completed, you’ll enter student teaching. During your 16-week placement, you’ll lead full lessons and take on real classroom responsibilities. Many describe this final phase as both exciting and empowering, and you’ll graduate confident and classroom-ready.

Starting as early as your first year, you’ll step into local classrooms to observe and learn from experienced teachers. 

By junior and senior year, you’ll complete over 100 hours of fieldwork, taking on more responsibility through small-group and full-class instruction. Throughout it all, you’ll be supported by a mentor teacher and a faculty advisor who guide you every step of the way.

You’ll learn to support the diverse academic, social and emotional needs of students. 

Courses like EDFD 460/461 and EDFD 462 focus on culturally responsive teaching and social justice, with projects that help you explore and address real-world inequities. 

Clinical placements give you hands-on experience with students from a wide range of backgrounds, preparing you to teach with inclusivity and equity in mind.

You’ll be supported by a strong mentoring and coaching system throughout your clinical experience, designed to help you reflect, grow and confidently step into your teaching career.

You’ll be paired with:

• A dedicated cooperating teacher who serves as your mentor and coach, providing hands-on feedback and guidance in the classroom.
• A university supervisor works closely with you both to support your progress, answer questions, and ensure you stay on track. They also serve as a connection to the Center for Student Success, helping you access additional resources as needed.
